Who’s Using Google Cloud Platform (GCP)? [2020]

A Look at the Uptake of Google Cloud Platform

Google doesn’t release the figures for the total number of Cloud Platform customers regionally or worldwide. However, it’s safe to say that while they don’t have as many customers AWS or Azure, they’re sitting in a healthy third place in the cloud services market. In the 2019 fiscal year, they reported GCP revenues growing 153% year-on-year. This represents significant growth for the platform.

In Flexera’s State of the Cloud 2019 report, which surveyed 786 tech professionals across a range of organisations, the findings confirm Google Cloud Platform as the third most-utilised cloud platform, behind AWS and Azure. Use of GCP rose slightly from 18% in 2018 to 19% in 2019. Perhaps a more interesting figure coming out of the survey shows that 41% of enterprise respondents with future projects show the most interest in Google Cloud Platform.

Google Cloud Platform Customers: The Ultimate List

So who is using Google Cloud Platform? Scroll down to the bottom of the blog for the full list of the thousand or so publicly-known customers of GCP.

The Big Spenders

By searching with Intricately, we can check who is spending $500K+ a month (as of 29/02/20) worldwide on Google Compute Engine, a product of Google Compute Cloud. The results of the top ten are:

  • Verizon: $79.9 million
  • Twitch Interactive: $63.8 million
  • CenturyLink: $61.8 million
  • LinkedIn Corp: $41.1 million
  • NewsCorp: $40.9 million
  • SAP: $40.1 million
  • Facebook, Inc: $ 39.4 million
  • Intel: $39.2 million
  • Yahoo: $46.6 million
  • Marriott International: $35.9 million

Putting Google Cloud Platform to Use

You’ll notice some big names up there in the top ten monthly spenders. Now it’s time to see just how these companies are using Google Cloud Platform within their organisation via some quick case studies. Use them to see if any of their use cases might be some inspiration in how GCP could work for you.

Paypal + GCP worldwide infrastructure

The Paypal group of companies is a household name worldwide, with Paypal, Venmo, and Xoom just a few of their merchant-consumer financial services brands. Back in 2018, Paypal announced their partnership with GCP, announcing to the public that they had already moved 15% of their infrastructure to GCP, with plenty more to come.

Why? With their infrastructure growing significantly (in scale 30% year on year), it was time to turn to the public cloud for rapid scalability without the overheads of proprietary infrastructure - but with the benefits of a faster, more reliable network and increased security - essential for payment platforms. Google was chosen as a partner due to significant presence in countries worldwide - as Paypal is offered in over 200 countries/regions.

Their migration started with a trial with their software development moving to GCP. After initial successes, more business units and infrastructure migrated. Now, Paypal engineers work alongside engineers from GCP in San Jose and Salt Lake City to build solutions that match the scale and value of Paypal’s services.

The Home Depot moves to cloud data warehousing

Did you know that Home Depot is the world’s largest home improvement company? As you can image, with a large physical footprint across their mega-stores as well as online e-commerce capabilities. Supporting the massive amounts of data involved with inventory, turnover, and analytics Home Depot initially had inhouse data warehousing.

As data analysis became more complex and data warehousing capacity kept filling up, even after massive inhouse infrastructure restructuring, the company realised it was time to move to a more viable, scalable solution. Google Cloud’s scalable, serverless Big Query was the product chosen for their cloud enterprise data warehouse due to benefits such as capacity scaling within one day to a week and low administration overheads. The significant rollover resulted in massive reductions across data analyses such as supply chain use cases, customer order use cases, and store performance dashboard use cases.

GitLab increases speed and uptime for their DevOps lifecycle platform

If we go a little meta here, we can check out the case study of GitLab. GitLab.com offers users a web-based DevOps lifecycle tool integrated with Git repositories that helps software companies ‘do’ DevOps across their software development lifecycle. Recently dubbed a leader in cloud-native continuous integration, a key component of DevOps, customers also can use native integration with Google Kubernetes Engine, making clustering on Google Cloud Platform a snap.

GitLab’s deep integration with Google Kubernetes Engine was the reason they chose GCP over their previous providers, Azure.

After migration, they witnessed a 61% improvement in availability for GitLab.com, along with 99.95% availability.

Target’s suite of 5400 apps

Target has over 5400 apps? While you may only be aware of only one or two customer-facing apps from this large retail chain, there are plenty more apps powered by the Target Application Platform, apps which help with tasks such as checkout workflow, distribution centre operations, and data centre queries. The Target Application Platform was built as a place where developers could build apps built with Kubernetes rapidly, for release on Google Cloud for high availability and speed.

It means Target have their own internal build, test, and deployment platform - a one-stop shop that can be used by developers all over the world, all integrated with GCP.

Did You Know?

These are just some of the uses of Google Cloud Platform in businesses across the world. Here are some more stats and info that can fill in the rest of the picture.

Google Cloud Platform started out with Google App Engine, the first cloud service offered by the company, a platform which allows devs to build web applications for deployment in managed Google data centres.

Revenue

The fiscal year 2019 saw revenues of $8.9 billion USD, up from $5.8 million in the previous year.

While this is no comparison to AWS and Azure revenues, who do many more times that per quarter, Google is gaining significant wins in securing deals with large companies such as Sabre (with a new 10-year agreement).

Users

Customers are attracted to GCP not only for the regular cloud services offered, but for Google’s deep knowledge in certain areas - such as self-driving vehicles and healthcare. It’s these competitive advantages that mean certain organisations turn to Google as their main supplier of cloud services.

According to Google, its customers include:

  • 8 of the top 10 telecommunications companies
  • 7 of the top 10 software & internet companies
  • 7 of the top 10 media & entertainment companies
  • 7 of the top 10 retail & CPG companies

Google themselves note the following industries as their main focus:

  • Retail
  • Manufacturing
  • Financial services
  • Energy
  • Healthcare and life services
  • Government
  • Media and entertainment
  • Education
  • Gaming

And how about developers? We can also check out what they’re doing via Stack Overflow’s 2019 Developer Survey. The survey reports that 12.4% of developers currently worked with Google Cloud Platform platform, and 66.8% reported loving the experience.

Services, Regions and Partners

GCP is appealing because it runs on the same infrastructure that Google uses themselves, with currently 67 zones, 140 edge locations, and operating across 200+ countries across the world. New cloud locations will soon be launched in Melbourne, Australia, Las Vegas, USA, and Toronto, Canada, among others.

Google Cloud Platform offers over 90 services across areas such as networking, infrastructure, machine learning, data analysis, application build and management, databasing, cold storage, identity, and more.

Google Cloud Platform partners are companies that specialise in helping organisations with their GCP implementation and rollout, and sometimes service management too. These companies are Google certified to do so, with some carrying specialisations for services, regions, or industries. We are a proud Google Cloud Platform partner, with specialisations in digital transformation, DevOps transformations, DevOps & cloud security, cloud native software development and data and analytics platforms.

Market Share

Research from Jefferies suggests that Google Cloud Platform’s estimated share in the cloud services market among the “big three” (i.e. GCP, AWS and Azure) in 2020 will be 9%, up from 8% in 2019. This puts them in third place behind AWS (63% in 2019) and Azure (29% in 2019). Jeffries also suggests that CAPEX growth will be at 22% for GCP in 2020, far beyond that of its competitors.

The Google Cloud Platform Opportunity

Google Cloud Platform isn’t just “another option” in the cloud services market. They offer competitive pricing, a similar range of services to AWS and Azure, plus you can trust their infrastructure and services - because they’re what Google use themselves.

Every organisation is different and has different use cases for what they need from their cloud provider/s. If you’d like some assistance in discovering whether GCP is the right fit for your circumstances, then reach out - we’re be happy to help figure it out with you.
