Introducing Momentum: Our Framework for Large Scale Enterprise DevOps Transformation

Introducing Momentum: Our Framework for Large Scale Enterprise DevOps Transformation

At Contino, we focus exclusively on helping large regulated organisations move to a DevOps in the cloud operating model. It’s a niche, but there are lots of companies looking to do this as part of their “digital transformation” ambitions - becoming faster, more agile, more efficient and leaner in the way they bring applications to market.

Having supported companies on this journey many times over the last 3 years, we’ve iterated and learnt and developed a repeatable methodology for transforming from where you are today (usually some mix of waterfall, agile, and tiny pockets of ‘DevOps’), to a full DevOps model at scale.

We call this delivery methodology Momentum.

Momentum is a fairly lightweight process by which Contino take an organisation on the DevOps journey. It describes the steps and the key considerations as you move up the maturity curve.

Why Is Momentum Needed?

A company considering a DevOps transformation will typically have questions such as these:

  • How do we prove DevOps in our environment and the unique context of our business?
  • How do we scale it to hundreds or thousands of engineers and applications?
  • How do we track improvement and validate the business case?
  • How and where do we adopt these principles?
  • What should our DevOps operating model look like?
  • The same questions come up time and again. And many companies get stuck in a strategy or analysis by paralysis phase.

By following Momentum, you shortcut a lot of this and de-risk your DevOps transformation. You’ll prove it in small bite sized pieces that prove that DevOps will work in your environment, and has a true return on investment associated.

Backed By Data

Momentum is completely underpinned by Metrics and data. As people always say about DevOps, you can’t improve what you can’t measure, so we’ve ensured that we take a snapshot of current maturity, and then track the improvement and business case over time.

We’ve developed a new tool which we use with out clients to track their capability uplift over time. Over the coming weeks, we will be releasing a free version of this tool so that teams can use it to self assess using a simple online questionnaire. We are currently looking for beta testers, so please reach out if you are looking to track and improve your DevOps maturity.

Steps Behind Momentum

Momentum is divided into the following 5 steps which we will typically execute over a 6-18 month period with our clients.

Nurture It: A series of educational workshops which can be used to educate and align stakeholders in your organisation on DevOps/cloud adoption.

Plan It: Strategic work designed to develop and achieve alignment of stakeholders on the strategy for your organisation adopting DevOps/cloud adoption.

Prove It: Lighthouse delivery projects with a transformational angle designed to prove new ways of working, approaches, architectures in your organisation which can be used as a scalable model for future operation.

Scale It: Initiatives to scale an in flight DevOps initiative to a broader scope within your organisation such as target operating model and training academies.

Accelerate & Improve It: Initiatives to continue improving your organisational performance or technology adoption.

We look forward to sharing more information on Momentum over the coming weeks and months. If you would like to learn more about how this framework can be used to accelerate your DevOps transformation, please get in touch for an informal chat.
